What is counselling?

We all have problems in our lives. Some are small and easily dealt with, others more complicated. However, most of us at one point or another feel overwhelmed by life circumstances which can leave us feeling helpless, alone and that there is no way out.

People consider seeing a counsellor for many different reason,s such as feeling depressed, anxious, experiencing eating disorders, relationship difficulties and bereavement. The counsellor is there to listen to you and to support you. Having a safe place to share difficulties helps us to understand our feelings and how other people react to us. This can lead to increased self-confidence and feeling more in control of our lives.

Counselling can help you see things more clearly, perhaps from a different perspective. It can enable you to make choices and reduce confusion. It does not involve giving advice or directing you to a particular course of action.

Everyone has their own answers and given a safe environment to explore your issues, you will be able to draw upon your own resources to find your own solutions. A skilled counsellor can offer caring and non-judgemental discussion where you will be accepted as you are and allowed to wqork at your own pace in discovering more about yourself.
